New Copper Foil Class – April 2017

19 March, 2017/Class

I will be teaching a class at Seattle Stained Glass. Details:

Introduction to Copper Foil (Tiffany Method of Stained Glass)

The copper foil technique, method made popular by Louis Comfort Tiffany at the turn of the century, involves wrapping pieces of glass with copper foil and soldering them together along the length of the seams.

Copper foil can be used as an alternative to lead in any instance at the personal preference of the user. It is much stronger than lead when soldered, needs no putty, is waterproof, and allows you to do intricately detailed projects where the substantial look and weight of lead would detract from the aesthetics of a delicate design. Copper foil also allows for the construction of three-dimensional objects such as lamps and boxes.

Participants will build their own copper foil stained glass window or lampshade.

If you want to do a flat window, it should be about 20”x20”. You should bring two copies of your pattern to class. If you want to do a lampshade with flat sides, bring two copies for each side. Many free patterns can be found through Google searching, but if you can’t find one you like, I can help you on the first day of class. (But you may need to run to Kinko’s.)

If you want to do a globe-shaped lampshade, you will need to buy a form and a pattern. The easiest place is wordensystem.com. This is not recommended for beginners.

Class will meet one Saturday each week for four consecutive weeks. In addition to tuition, students can expect to spend between $200 – $300 for tools and materials during the course. Each student will go away with a finished stained glass piece, tools and enough experience to keep making more stained glass panels.

Emphasis is placed on learning techniques and skills. No experience required. Pre-registration required.

Tuition: $85.00

When: Classes meet once a week for four weeks from 3PM to 6PM. Saturday April 4-April 29.
